Brush fires out, LT unscathed

7th September 2005

Huge smoke plumes from the approach road to the ORM, the JKT and INT visible at left of picture.

Helicopters drop water on the flames at the ORM.

Flames reach the car park at the ORM Residencia.

After reaching a state of maximum alert yesterday when the flames reached the car park at the Residencia, the fire on the ORM site is now all out. The LT is not damaged and first reports indicate the other telescopes and Residencia are also unscathed.

There is still a lot of ash in the air, and smoke plumes from other fires on the island are drifting across the site. As a result we will not be observing tonight either.
